Superyacht Trends

Ball Marine

There has been for some time a move away from seeing superyachts as transport and towards seeing them as destinations. This trend has impacted the design, with a move towards creating a living space while the yacht is stationary and has also opened up the opportunity to use new technologies not usually associated with transport.

The team at Ball Marine were recently taken with some fine examples of this, such as the use of glass especially as part of the structure. Glass is providing naval architects with far more creative scope, as it can flood the interiors with natural light, be changed to one way/privacy when required, and provide UV filter and sun shade, all via electronics without the need for blinds or curtains.

The structural strength of glass also allows entire walls to be created from glass, rather than just having windows cut into the wall. This can create breath-taking views and a much closer connection to the marine environment.

The modern superyacht has little in common with the traditional vessels with their small round portholes, and developments in structural glass has allowed for designs which truly reflect the shift in design from a means of transport to a destination in itself.
