Building blocks series: Carbon fiber

Carbon fiber (or carbon fibre depending on where you are in the world) can often be seen in high performance sports, military application, civil engineering and aerospace applications, due to it’s light weight and high strength properties.

It is made from fibers about 5 to 10 micrometers in diameter and composed mostly of carbon atoms. The carbon fibers have several attractions

1. It possesses a high strength to weight ratio

2. high stiffness,

3. high chemical resistance

4. high-temperature tolerance

5. delivers a smooth and easy to handle finish

Carbon fiber is produced when the carbon atoms are bonded together in crystals which gives the fiber it’s strength. Several thousand carbon fibers are bundled together to form a ‘tow’, which can then be woven into a fabric. These carbon fibers are combined with other materials to form a composite. When permeated with resin and baked, it forms carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer, given the carbon fiber material we are generally used to seeing.
