The Ball Marine design team set out to shake up the traditional boat hook - by asking the questions: "What are today's requirements for a boat hook?" and "what additional value could the boat hook provide through a fresh design?".
We spoke to people from the marine industry that move boats all day everyday, the humble weekend sailor, super yacht crew, small boat fishing enthusiasts... along with anyone else who was generous enough to offer us an opinion.
Based on our interviews and research, we developed the following principles to guide our design process.
'Can't miss' line (and hat!) retrieval. A larger collection point with better line grip.
Ability to 'softly' fend and push off without doing damage (eg no more sharp pointy plastic end).
Light weight and easy to work with.
Strong a reliable. Won't bend, buckle, snap, self collapse at critical times.
A product that is as beautiful as our customers boats and doesn't need to be hidden in shame.
Over 50 design concepts were then created, with many 3D printed and prototyped. Our favorite model was then tweaked and tested for over 12 months before we were happy to introduce it into the Ball Marine product line and begin the material selection, engineering and field testing stages.
In true Ball Marine style, our engineers opted for a carbon fiber shaft, with a titanium hook head - finished with a marine grade leather handle for grip and style.
We are ecstatic with the end product and continue to receive excellent feedback and reviews from our client, as we change the game for boat hooks forever.
